Language Exit Requirements (LERs)
For First-Year-First-Degree (FYFD) students admitted in 2024/25 or before
Under the language policy of the University, all full-time undergraduate students are subject to the Language Exit Requirements (LERs) for English and Putonghua (Note 1). Such students who have attained the required band score in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Note 2) or equivalent during their four/five years of study (Note 3) will be deemed to have satisfied the LER for English; students who have attained the required level in Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi (PSC) or Tertiary Putonghua Test (TPT) will be deemed to have satisfied the LER for Putonghua.

# Students are NOT subject to the minimum IELTS score requirement for each component of IELTS. In addition, the following tests will be accepted as an alternative as having met the LER for English:
- An attainment of Level 3 or above in all four areas (Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing) in Language Proficiency Assessment (English) obtained in a single sitting or multiple sittings;
- An attainment of a test score of 95 or above in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test; or
- Other possible alternatives may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
## Students are NOT subject to the minimum IELTS score requirement for each component of IELTS. In addition, the following tests will be accepted as an alternative as having met the LER for English:
- An attainment of a test score of 105 or above in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test; or
- Other possible alternatives may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
### Students are required to obtain IELTS 7.0 or above in each component namely Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. In addition, the following tests will be accepted as an alternative as having met the LER for English:
- An attainment of a test score of 105 or above in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test; or
- Other possible alternatives may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Note 1: LERs under the Language Policy are not a graduation requirement. However, some language-major programmes have specific graduation requirements on language proficiency. Please refer to your programme handbook for further details.
Note 2: Only Paper-based/Computer-based IELTS Academic Tests taken at a test centre in one sitting will be accepted.
Note 3: Full-time undergraduate students admitted before 2021/22 may take IELTS during their penultimate and final-year of study, while full-time UGC-funded undergraduate non-English-major students admitted in 2021/22 and thereafter are advised to follow the guidance of the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) and take IELTS in the fourth English enhancement course.
