On March 18, 2025, the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) at The Education University of Hong Kong welcomed Professor Gwo-Jen Hwang, Chair Professor and Vice President of Taichung University of Education, for a distinguished seminar titled “Artificial Intelligence in Education: Theoretical Perspectives and Research Approaches.” The hybrid event was coordinated and chaired by Dr. Lan Yang, Associate Professor and Associate Head (Research), whose efforts helped attract 168 registrants from local and international academic institutions, demonstrating the department’s strong engagement in global academic discourse.
Professor Hwang's seminar offered a robust and research-informed overview of the development and pedagogical integration of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED). He discussed how intelligent tutoring systems are being used to personalize learning pathways, enhance formative assessment practices, and deliver timely feedback. He also introduced the use of AI peers and generative systems—such as the e-Du platform and ChatGPT—as tools to support student cognition and inquiry in diverse learning contexts, including clinical and language education.
The participant profile revealed a diverse, globally engaged audience. Over 100 attendees were affiliated with EdUHK, and others joined from institutions in Mainland China, Taiwan, Turkey, and Mongolia—such as İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa and Mongolian National University of Education—underscoring both the broad relevance of AIED and the international reach of C&I’s academic network.
This seminar served as a timely affirmation of the department’s strategic direction. As reiterated by Professor Yan Zi, Head of C&I, the department remains committed to leveraging cutting-edge digital technologies to enhance curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment. The insights provided by Professor Hwang directly supported this commitment, further solidifying C&I’s role as a leader in digital-age educational innovation.
The department expresses its deep appreciation to Professor Hwang for his forward-thinking contribution and to all participants for their engagement. The event marked another milestone in C&I’s mission to foster interdisciplinary research and strengthen the bridge between educational theory and real-world practice amid the global digital transformation.
