Prof Jim McKinley from UCL visits C&I

2025-11-21

Professor Jim McKinley from University College London (UCL), invited by Dr Kevin Yung, visited the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) from 17 to 21 November 2025. Jim McKinley is Professor of Applied Linguistics in higher education at the Institute of Education (IOE) at UCL. He also serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of System, Co-Editor of Cambridge Elements: Language Teaching, and incoming Chief Editor of TESOL Quarterly (2025).

During his visit, Professor McKinley delivered two hybrid seminars: (1) “Navigating Global Higher Education and Academic Publishing: Insights from an Editor” (18 November 2025) and (2) “Publishing, Practitioner Research, and Pedagogical Innovation in the GenAI Era” (20 November 2025). Both sessions attracted academic staff and postgraduate students across faculties, fostering critical dialogue on scholarly publishing and pedagogical innovation in the context of Generative AI.

In addition to the seminars, Professor McKinley provided six individual consultation sessions for staff and students, offering personalised advice on publication strategies, international research collaboration and professional development. He also participated in Dr Yung’s Master of Teaching course, interacting with students during their poster presentations and contributing to discussions on academic reading and international conference preparation.

Prof Jim McKinley is currently collaborating with Dr Kevin Yung on a collaborative reaserch project titled “Understanding university students’ agency in using generative AI for academic writing” funded by EdUHK’s seek funding grant to establish strategic research collaboration between EdUHK and IOE.
