As a major teacher education provider, the Institute has a long tradition of partnering with the local school community. Since its establishment in 1994, this spirit of collaboration has been extended to tertiary institutions both locally and beyond Hong Kong's borders. This ensures that staff and students gain a global, as well as a local perspective on educational issues.

Representatives of four tertiary teacher education providers participated in a fruitful discussion at an Initial Teacher Education Symposium.

Collaboration in Hong Kong

Joint Programmes
Over the years, the Institute has developed collaborative programmes with different institutions, which involve student and staff exchanges as well as the sharing of knowledge and materials. In 2005-06, the HKIEd collaborated with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Lingnan University in Mathematics, Science and English Language related degree programmes.

Subsequent to the Agreement on Deep Collaboration signed between the Heads of the Institute and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the two institutions have been exploring the launching of collaborative programmes. In mid-December 2005, the first joint degree programme in English Studies and Education was announced by the two parties. The curriculum of the newly introduced programme has been well-integrated and customised to train teachers with a solid foundation in English language and literature, together with strong pedagogical knowledge and skills. Graduates of the programme are eligible for registration as qualified English teachers in Hong Kong's schools.

Collaboration between Teacher Education Institutions
The Institute hosted a Symposium on Initial Teacher Education on 12 May 2006, which was co-organised by Hong Kong's four tertiary teacher education providers, namely the Institute itself, the Hong Kong Baptist University Department of Education Studies, CUHK Faculty of Education and the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Education. These four also organised a symposium on 26 June 2006, "Advancing Collaboration between Teacher Education Institutions and Schools to Prepare for Tomorrow's Teachers" The Symposium was well received by participants, including primary and secondary school principals, members of the Advisory Committee on Teacher Education and Qualification, as well as officials from the Education and Manpower Bureau.
