People are our most vital asset. It is the quality of our staff
that ensures our students become quality teachers who will provide
a better education, and in turn, a brighter and better future
for the entire community.
A Commitment
to Teaching
Self-improvement through continuous quality enhancement is a shared
mission within the Institute. The improved quality of our student
intake is a prime example. Over the years, we have witnessed a
significant enhancement in the academic qualifications of our
students.
Our admission process also endeavours to ensure that those selected
possess the personal qualities and attitudes required of future
professional teachers. After looking at applicants' academic achievements
under the Joint University Programmes Admissions Scheme (JUPAS),
we conduct a General Suitability Interview to determine whether
applicants have the necessary attributes to be a teacher in terms
of communicative ability, commitment, concern and creativity.
In 2003-04, a total of 97 school principals and senior teachers
joined Institute staff in conducting these interviews to evaluate
the personal qualities of applicants and determine their suitability
as professional teachers.
We are committed to providing a rich campus
environment, quality facilities, excellent student support services
and diverse learning opportunities to facilitate whole-person
development. The extensive range of personal and professional
development activities we provide cover language enhancement,
IT competencies, professional and personal development and partnership
projects, as well as the Quality Teacher Development Award Scheme,
which aims to nurture knowledgeable, caring and responsible
teachers. In 2003-04, a total of 531 students participated in
this scheme.
Our
2003-04 Outstanding Student Awards
To promote a spirit of excellence among students, we awarded
131 prizes, together with 103 scholarships, worth around $3,200,000
in 2003-04. These awards encourage and reward our students for
outstanding achievements and performance.
Ensuring a
Rich and Diverse Campus Life
In order to broaden the horizons of our students with a view
to developing a global outlook as well as an appreciation for
cultural diversity, we organised language immersion programmes,
student exchange activities and study visits throughout the
academic year. Co-curricular activities and programmes were
also offered as a vital element of the education of our students.
In 2003-04, 13,000 student enrolments were recorded in close
to 80 types of co-curricular activities.
With around 2,000 hostel places, all full-time first year students
have the opportunity to live on campus. The experience of hostel
life has been carefully designed to form an integral part of
their whole-person development. Helping our first year students
to settle easily into their new life, our Personal Tutorial
Scheme gives them access to pastoral care and professional guidance
provided by teaching staff.
