Development Priorities &
Charter Statement
The development of capabilities is an ongoing learning exercise for all school
leaders. Continuous learning is aligned with personal values, career intentions
and leadership practices - these in turn are key elements of your charter.
most schools ask all teachers to compile a Personal development Plan (or similar
terms such as individual development Plan, Continuous Learning Plan, etc.,
are sometimes used) in consultation with their line manager. This guides the
identification of learning priorities over a period of time – normally a one or two
year cycle.
A Personal development Plan is a map of the learning people will (or would
like to) be involved in. As such, it articulates personal learning priorities and
describes how engaging in these will improve teaching/leading and benefit
students and the school.
in Links we don’t want to duplicate the PdPs participants are engaging in their
schools but, rather, to work with them to enhance leadership learning. We
therefore focus (through the leadership charter) on identifying learning priorities
through self and collegial analysis of leadership capabilities.
The purpose of discerning and clarifying priorities is to guide improved leadership
practice through helping participants see what is important to their future
development and to help them establish a set of realistic leadership expectations.
That is, what leaders expect of themselves ANd what others can expect from
them. These expectations will form the statement of the Leadership Charter (or
Charter statement) and flow from the process of developing the Charter.
