Teacher entrepreneurialism combines competence, character and care as vital drivers
of professional knowledge, skills, and passion.
We understand that school survival is dependent on performance in public examinations.
Therefore, teachers must meet the school requirements in equipping the students to deal with
the public exam. Although education reform has been envisioned to promote whole-person
development and life-long learning, school seldom facilitates teachers to be more innovative
and entrepreneurial in nurturing students’ growth.
However, in our programme, we have found that a new generation of entrepreneurial teachers
has an unlimited passion for innovative curricula and teaching. Although they do not have
substantial resources to support their initiative, their school empowers teacher ‘autonomy’
to develop ideas.
We find that school leaders believe in entrepreneurial teachers’ professional judgment
and allow them to adapt their innovative teaching approaches and content to keep abreast of
school and student needs. Even if the content is not entirely consistent with the curriculum,
entrepreneurial teachers can incorporate it into their teaching to enhance student learning,
interests and life skills.
We have learned that entrepreneurial teachers develop their unique curriculum with higher
autonomy and passion. Both autonomy and passion go hand-in-hand to help them shape and
improve their innovative initiatives. As a school leader, the way to mobilise and facilitate
entrepreneurial teachers' success is ‘empowering autonomy.’
Do what your part is (empowerment),
let the entrepreneurial teachers do the rest.
