Aiming raise awareness of plastic waste and encourage reduction of disposable plastic straws in local higher education sector and beyond, a joint campaign named “UNIfy: Skip the Straw” organized by the Hong Kong Sustainable Campus Consortium (HKSCC) will be launched in the week of 12th March 2018 whereby the catering outlets in the eight publicly-funded universities will no longer offer disposable straws to customers unless requested.  Yet, considering the substantial merits of such campaign it is hoped that this is a sustainable deed that will carry on even after this week.  In this connection, all catering outlets on EdUHK Tai Po Campus will no longer offer disposable straws to customer from 12 March 2018 unless requested.

In the last few decades, plastic straws have been provided, sometimes unnecessarily, for drinks, especially in cold drinks.  The majority of the used straws ended up in the oceans and have turned into marine debris, resulting in chemicals and toxins entering the food chain through bio-accumulation, affecting both the ecosystem and fisheries, ultimately threatening human health.

We hope you will support this joint campaign too by reducing the use of disposable straws. When you order a beverage, kindly consider the following alternatives instead of asking for a straw:

  • Drink directly from cup;
  • Use a reusable spoon; or
  • Bring your own reusable straw.

Though this is seen as a small step, when it is supported and acts upon collectively, this can lead to a huge leap forward towards environmental protection and marine biodiversity and reverse the existing alarming trend.

For more information about this campaign, please visit HKSCC’s website at http://www.hkscc.edu.hk/activities/skip-the-straw.

We look forward to your support for this campaign.
