FEHD Launches a New Interdisciplinary Area of Research Excellence in Intercultural Studies

2017-03-24

FEHD has launched a new interdisciplinary area of research excellence in Intercultural Studies. Intercultural Studies is an interdisciplinary, cross-faculty area of research excellence, particularly in relation to ethnic minorities. Led by Prof. Christine Halse, the team members across different departments will study on four signature research themes:

  1. Understanding the diversity across all young people in education;
  2. Educational leadership for building positive intercultural relations;
  3. Intercultural pedagogies for multicultural and languages education; and
  4. International education, internationalization and interculturality.

Intercultural Studies focuses on i) how individuals and groups understand themselves and people who are different from them, including those whose ethnic, religious, cultural, language and socio-economic status is different; ii) how these differences come about and are sustained; and iii) how teachers, education leaders, education policies and practices can bridge intercultural differences to enhance educational, social and economic opportunities for all young people.

This area of strength builds on our existing expertise in ethnic minority research by bringing together a cross-faculty team of scholars to help establish FEHD as an international area of excellence in intercultural studies.
