We Work Together for Cultural Competence

Kaur Lovepreet- Bachelor of Education (Honours) (English Language), Year 3

Founder and the President of OPUS of Intercultural Society

When I first came to EdUHK, it took time to make friends, perhaps because of the ethnical differences, and perhaps Hong Kong students were comparatively shy during their first year. Lucky for me that I met an amazing group of friends who shared the same aspiration. We decided to form a team and create a platform, OPUS of Intercultural Society, to connect people.

Like everyone else, it was always difficult at the start and we felt lost as we lacked experiences in event promotion and management. It was until we met the amazing and helpful SAO staff from the Non-local Student Support Services. We decided to first equip ourselves with relevant skills through joining SAO activities before we took the ultimate step to startup our society. I have had the privilege to join the Global Hong Kong Ambassador Programme, both as a student participant and an Ambassador. This programme provided me with in-depth exploration of Hong Kong culture in multi-dimension and appreciation of diversities that live within.

Through participating in various SAO activities and taking the role of Ambassador to hold cultural events, these experiences enhanced my personal development. I gained exposure to the different faces of local culture, equipped myself with leadership and event organizing skills, broadened my networks with people who embrace cultural diversity.

Lastly, I am motivated to pursue my dream in promoting interculturalism in the society. I hope the efforts of me and my team can help create a culturally-diverse environment and allow more conversations among people.
