In particular, we are keenly aware of the unique role EdUHK will
play in advancing the betterment of the local school sector and
beyond”.
Established in 1994 upon the amalgamation of the former
Colleges of Education and the Institute of Language in Education,
EdUHK is the only publicly funded tertiary institution in Hong
Kong solely dedicated to professional teacher education. It
submitted applications for university title to the Education Bureau
in 2007 and 2014. Following its application in 2014, the Executive
Council in January 2016 approved the award of a university title
to the HKIEd, which was followed by the passage of the relevant
legislative amendments in LegCo on 19 May.
In a joint announcement issued after the LegCo’s passage of
the Bill, Mr Pang and Professor Cheung paid tribute to all staff,
students, alumni, and stakeholders for their unfailing support in
helping EdUHK achieve the milestone.
