Main Theme:

THE FUTURE IS THEIRS: VISIONS FOR PRIMARY EDUCATION IN THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY

UNESCO declared 1979 the International Year of the Child with the slogan: “The future is theirs. The responsibility is ours”. Thirty years later, we think it is appropriate to look again at this responsibility throughout those formative years of schooling. Schools serve many different roles in our societies: but we want to focus on the ways in which primary schools can provide pathways to the future for our young people. Nineteenth century ideas about schools do not help us with this task. We want a twenty-first century vision for schools and we want this conference to be the starting point of our deliberations.
