At the invitation of Dr Yuen Man Wai from the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, Miss Daisy Chow, Mathematics Deputy Panel Head at Shatin Pui Ying College with over ten years of secondary education experience, delivered an insightful seminar titled How to Become a Professional Math Secondary School Teacher in HK. The session resonated deeply with attending students aspiring to enter the teaching profession.
Drawing from her personal trajectory, Miss Chow addressed the essential mindset transition from a student and question-solver to a professional mathematics educator. She provided a comprehensive overview of frontline practices, including instructional delivery, educational tool integration, problem-solving strategies, material development, and classroom management. To enhance assessment literacy, she unpacked test design blueprints, demonstrated how to calibrate difficulty and time allocations while avoiding common paper-setting pitfalls, and clarified the distinction between summative assessment and assessment for learning. Participants engaged in hands-on marking practice using public examination scoring criteria to construct precise diagnostic feedback. Concluding her address, Miss Chow offered prospective teachers an actionable roadmap for professional readiness, emphasising thorough lesson preparation, establishing classroom routines, embracing trial and error, maintaining personal passion, and leveraging collaborative team strengths.
