We Cherish Every Dollar You Donated

When the government re-launched a six-month Matching Grants Scheme in August 2005, it set, amongst other things, the formula of $1 = $1 matching, for the first $45 million raised by individual tertiary institutions. For HKIEd — a young teacher education institution, which has been adversely affected by news revolving around education, the $45 million quota is admittedly a tall order. As of November 2005, the fund raised stood at $3 million. However we never gave up hope and every member at the HKIEd did his / her best to help inject funds into the pool for the matching grants.

THE EFFORTS PRODUCED miracles! When 31 January 2006 arrived, the deadline for the $1 = $1 matching grant, the donations had jumped six-fold reaching over $21 million. To put this magnificent effort in context, the amount raised in the six months from August 2005 to January 2006 is more than the total sum raised in the 16 months of the first round of the Matching Grants Scheme, starting March 2003. This impressive record is the results of generous donations coming from all sides. The list includes Sir Gordon Wu's $3 million endowment funds, the Hongkong Bank Foundation's $2.4 million funding for Zippy's Friends Shanghai project, Merrill Lynch and its staff's $2.5 million for the Project Aspire, a donation of $2 million from Sheng Kung Hui, and Mr Richard Li's $2 million to support the research and development of small class teaching.

When the entire Matching Grants Scheme ended on 28 February 2006, the Institute had raised a total of over $22 million, of which over $21.5 million will be doubled by the government. Though we are below the $45 million floor limit, the creativity and thoughtfulness that members of the HKIEd and the school sector put into the endeavour, once again demonstrate the education community is on a united front.

The Institute wishes to take this opportunity to extend our most sincere gratitude to each and every donor for every dollar you donated through the various fund-raising activities!
