HKIEd students bringing drama alive to secondary schools

In late June, the English Department staged a drama production of "The Visit", based on the famous German tragic-comedy written in the 1950s by Friedrich DŸrrenmatt. It is a masterpiece of European theatre - a story of passion, greed and humour which is still relevant to us in Hong Kong today.

Seats were in great demand and on the day of the performance the play had successfully attracted 1,000 students and teachers from 34 local secondary schools as well as academics from tertiary institutions. When the house light dimmed and the curtain went up, the fully packed hall was quickly absorbed by the performance. With a carefully contrived symbolic stage setting, including sound and lighting effects, the moods and emotions of the audience were led down a time-tunnel, entering a small town in the post-war Germany.
