In mid-May, at the HKIEd Tai Po campus, Professor Cheng displayed his water colour paintings in a private art exhibition which he called "Meditation under the Cosmos". Whether he is painting an awe-inspiring landscape, a charming water lily, or a tranquil south China riverside village, the paintings reflect Professor Cheng's changing moods at the time of their creation. They present him in pensive mood, or maybe relaxed, or jubilant. In each painting, Professor Cheng has produced a remarkable work of artistic creation. Through his experience, Professor Cheng tells us how artistic creation and education research can complement each other.

The meaning of "Meditation under the Cosmos"
Heaven and earth, rivers and mountains, have always been favourite themes in Professor Cheng's water colour paintings. His artistry illustrates the interaction between Man and Nature, emphasising the importance of harmony between the two. Professor Cheng explains "Man becomes so tiny and insignificant amidst Nature. Returning to Nature means returning to the wilderness and to places as natural as mountains and seas. I have let the realistic details go, leaving only the feelings of man under the influence of the cosmos. That is the true meaning of my paintings".

He points out that it is a "heart-searching" process. He paints by putting his observations on, and feelings for, nature into the paintings. His works are reflections of his moods when meditating on the boundless cosmos.
