Studying in an atmosphere
conducive to language learning
"Learn how to swim by swimming," is perhaps a good analogy
for the first step in becoming a language teacher. BEd(L) students are
provided with a wide range of opportunities to hone their skills in
English or Chinese (including Putonghua) within the curriculum, by practising
it all the time both inside and outside the classroom, when they talk
or write to lecturers, tutors and classmates.
Learning a language through
many different approaches
The essence of a language is embedded in its culture, which provides
a rich resource for learning and teaching. In the contemporary context,
culture covers literature, films, music, popular culture and many different
art forms. Students of the English major are introduced to works written
in English at different times and by authors of various backgrounds.
Many students consider the language arts and the literature courses
to be the most interesting elements of the programme.
Literature constitutes a significant proportion of the Chinese major
curriculum and is intended to develop not only language ability, but
also the more sophisticated abilities of literary appreciation and creative
writing among students. In both the Chinese and English majors, the
goal of the literature modules is to help students develop a deeper
understanding and appreciation of the heritage of a culture.
