Arthur Hinton's teaching career was characterised by dedication to his subject and commitment to humanistic values. In the 1950s, he wrote in support of mother tongue education in Hong Kong. In the 1970s, he helped establish and led the Educators' Social Action Council, an early pressure group which contributed immensely to Hong Kong's growth as a civil society. Hinton's wealth of experience in education is recounted in his memoir "Only a Teacher" published jointly by Founders College, York University of Canada and the Hong Kong Institute of Education in 2004.

"Only a Teacher" is Arthur Hinton's autobiography. It takes us through three decades of Hong Kong education history and portrays the life of a dedicated teacher, devoted husband and parent, a pacifist, a man of integrity and a civil servant guided by his conscience.
