In
ancient China, the board game Go was recognised as an effective means to nurture
critical thinking skills, powers of concentration and moral virtue. Intellectuals
and princes were taught to play the game for this reason and Go was even used
in studies of military science and national governance.
Dr Doris Au, Principal of the HKIEd Jockey Club Primary
School (JCPS), took the initiative to introduce Go in the curriculum when
the school opened in 2002. In line with the school's aim to develop multiple
intelligence, Dr Au introduced Go to promote logical and critical thinking
skills. Guest teachers from the Hong Kong Children's Go College were invited
to conduct beginners' classes which were well received by teachers and
students. Seeing the potential of the game, Dr Au decided to promote it
throughout the territory. "Go motivates students' learning, inspires
ideas and trains up logical thinking. It also helps develop team spirit
and communication when participants play the game with peers and seniors.
Students need to face defeat, and to learn from failures. We encourage
parents to play the game with their children. This is a good way to foster
better parent-child relationships!" |
