Faculty Newsletter June 2016

人文學院通訊 FHM Newsletter This year, with the appointment of Dr. Bidisha Banerjee (LCS) as the Centre Director and Dr. Au Chung To (LCS) as Associate Director, the Centre has been committed to both academic research and non-academic events on the topic of popular culture. A symposium on “East Asian Popular Culture: Looking Back, Looking Forward” was held in January 2016 and included presentations by scholars on a range of topics. In April 2016, the Centre hosted Dr. Esther Peeren from the University of Amsterdam and Amsterdam Centre for Globalisation Studies, as a visiting scholar. During her stay, Dr. Peeren who is a scholar in globalization studies, offered workshops and lectures to faculty and students on topics such as peripherality and spectrality. The Centre also organised a series of events, moderated by faculty or invited scholars, devoted to recent creativity in Hong Kong and its surrounding areas in an attempt to provide alternative perspectives and foster new dialogues in popular culture in the region. Examples include a screening of a Taiwanese documentary “Rock me to the Moon” with guest sharing and performance; a seminar on Sit Down Comedy with a comedian currently based in Hong Kong; an illustration workshop and seminar with a well-known illustration art collective, Jie Jie and Uncle Cat; a seminar with filmmakers of the independent film Ten Years and a guest lecture delivered by Ah Guo, feature journalist and writer, on the alternative blockbuster TV Most award show in the context of Hong Kong popular culture and history.
