From 18 to 25 July, 2025, staff from the Department of Education Policy and Leadership (EPL) led a group of 11 EdUHK students to Bogor, Indonesia, to participate in Asia Pacific Democratic Education Conference (APDEC 2025).
APDEC is an annual event that offers a friendly and collaborative environment for participants to initiate and engage in dialogue and interactive activities with educators and stakeholders from diverse nations in the Asia-Pacific region. It facilitates the exchange of experiences and discussions on key educational issues. The main theme of APDEC 2025 is to address the need to reimagine future education in response to the rapidly evolving landscape of work and life. The advent of artificial intelligence, robotics, and the escalating impact of climate change are transforming our world in unprecedented ways. These changes demand a fundamental shift in how we approach education, moving away from traditional models to more dynamic and adaptive frameworks.
On 19 July, Dr. Leung Wing Tat and student Ms. Tong Wing Yi delivered a keynote presentation titled "Transformative Experience for Pre-Service Teachers: Insights from the Internship at an Alternative School in Hong Kong." Combining academic expertise with on-the-ground perspectives, Dr. Leung and Ms. Tong worked with APDEC participants to reflect on the missing links in teacher training today.
From 20 July to 22 July, the students organized multiple open space sessions on various themes, such as "Childhood Game Memories in Hong Kong," "Who Should Decide What Education Children Need," and "The Role of Student Unions in Non-Formal Education," among others. They engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges with international participants from around the world. Additionally, the students actively participated in a variety of other activities organized by fellow APDEC participants.
On 23 July, our students had the incredible opportunity to visit two distinguished schools in Indonesia: Junior High School 3 Gunung Sindur and Erudio Indonesia. These visits provided firsthand insights into Indonesia’s educational landscape and the diverse approaches to fostering democratic values within schools.
Junior High School 3 Gunung Sindur is renowned for its inclusive environment and active student participation in decision-making processes. The school emphasizes student councils and community projects, allowing students to voice their opinions and contribute to school governance, embodying the principles of democracy and civic engagement.
Erudio Indonesia focuses on fostering critical thinking and active citizenship. The school encourages democratic dialogue through classroom discussions, student-led initiatives, and participatory leadership opportunities.
These visits highlighted how both schools integrate democratic values into their daily routines, promoting an environment where students learn to participate, collaborate, and lead responsibly.
On 24 July, our students had an exciting educational trip to Jakarta, where they visited the Indonesia National Museum. The museum, renowned for its extensive collection of artifacts and historical exhibits, offers a comprehensive glimpse into Indonesia's rich cultural heritage and history.
