Seminar on "Student voice for social justice pedagogical method: Philosophical perspectives and empirical possibilities"

2023-09-20

The student voice for social justice (SVSJ) pedagogical method focuses on creating a socially just experience for students in higher education (HE) programmes. SVSJ is centred around a framework of active participation with students planning, interacting, observing, teaching, sharing, and reflecting on course content in small groups. In past implementations, students redefined how student voice is understood in scholarly discourse (Briffett-Aktas et al., 2023). In addition, SVSJ, according to participants, improved students' critical thinking and cognitive abilities through independent learning and shared learning, helping to promote knowledge-building between students and lecturers (Wong et al., 2023). In the international comparative project that is currently underway, we are focusing on the flexibility of SVSJ implementation across disciplines (education, educational leadership, philosophy, sociology, and developmental psychology) and regions (mainland China, Hong Kong, and Poland). We are also expanding philosophically significant aspects of SVSJ, including intellectual and cultural humility as virtues necessary for successful implementation.
