Magics & Realities: Rachel and Autumn’s Teacher Challenge Quest

An EdUHK student-initiated project by Rachel and Autumn is shedding light on the realities teachers encounter in modern classrooms and how future educators prepare to meet them. Their curiosity was sparked during an EPL course, where they compared the lives of teachers in the past with those of today, inspiring them to investigate how pre-service teachers can prepare themselves for contemporary challenges. Using Threads as a platform, they gathered a wide range of teacher-reported difficulties, from workload stress to home-school collaboration. To encourage imaginative solutions, Rachel and Autumn designed ten “magics”—creative ideas that could instantly resolve these problems—and surveyed pre-service teachers to discover which “magic” was most desired. Their project was later featured in the local newspaper Mingpao, sparking lively discussion among young teachers about resilience, priorities, and the evolving role of educators. By blending social media engagement, historical reflection, and imaginative inquiry, Rachel and Autumn’s work not only highlights pressing issues in teacher professionalism but also opens a dialogue on how creativity and preparation can help teachers thrive in today’s complex landscape.
