Congratulations to Dr Soobin Choi on His Latest Publication in Leadership and Policy in Schools

2026-03-12

We extend our congratulations to Dr Soobin Choi on his recent publication titled “Beyond Single Perspectives: Response Surface Analysis of Distributed Leadership Congruence and Teacher Satisfaction” in Leadership and Policy in Schools. This study challenges the traditional "single-informant" model by examining how the alignment (or misalignment) between principal and teacher perceptions of distributed leadership relates to teacher satisfaction.

Key Findings
• The "Eye-to-Eye" Benefit: Teacher satisfaction increases when both principals and teachers agree on higher levels of distributed leadership.
• The Power of Teacher Agency: Satisfaction is higher when teachers perceive more distributed leadership than their principal does, rather than the other way around—highlighting how teacher-driven agency can strongly enhance motivation.
• Global Consistency: These patterns were remarkably consistent across both the U.S. and South Korea, suggesting a universal value in relational leadership alignment.

Implications for Researchers
• Shift the Analytical Unit: To capture the "leader-plus" aspect of theory, researchers must move toward treating leadership as a "relational phenomenon experienced differently by individual actors based on their unique professional roles and responsibilities".

Implications for Educators & School Leaders
• Beyond Self-Evaluation: Principals should look beyond their own self-perceptions. Authentic distributed leadership is defined by how the staff perceives their own empowerment and agency.
• Alignment as a Diagnostic Tool: Use the concept of "alignment" as a lens for leadership development. Regular staff meetings and anonymous feedback loops can help identify gaps in communication and build the trust necessary for genuine co-performance.
