Dr Trevor Lee, Associate Professor in the Department of Education Policy and Leadership, was invited to be the keynote speaker at the 9th International Conference and Workshop on Experimental Education 2025. Hosted by the Taiwan Experimental Education Center (TEEC) at National Chengchi University in Taipei, the conference, themed “Education Beyond Schooling—Alternative ways for aiding lives of AI generation,” brought together global scholars to discuss innovative out-of-school education pathways. Presenting virtually on December 14, 2025, Dr Lee’s talk, “The Neoliberal Box and the Middle-Class Exit: Parental Values and Homeschooling in Hong Kong,” looked into the mainstream education—both the school system and the parent perspectives within it, and used the homeschooling case as an example to illustrate how middle-class families are increasingly seeking ways to get around Hong Kong’s high-pressure, performative school system. The presentation concluded by raising several reflective questions concerning an AI-shaped educational future.
Alongside fellow keynote speakers Prof Michael Corbett from Acadia University in Canada and Prof Jason Tan of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Dr Lee contributed to a dialogue regarding the influence parents have on education in the AI era.
