Research Design

The methodology adopted in this research is best described in terms of a mixed method research design that draws on both qualitative and quantitative research methods. As Johnson and Onwuegbuzie, (2004, p. 15) have pointed out ˇ§taking a non-purist or compatibilist or mixed position allows researchers to mix and match design components that offer the best chance of answering their specific research questionsˇ¨.

The mixed method design of the study will provide the research team with the tools to both understand the contexts that influence ethnic minority students as well as explore a model that might account for student learning. Qualitative data will help to illuminate the broad contexts of system, school and classroom. It will also help in the classification of schools in terms of their level of policy support for ethnic minority students. The quantitative data will provide insights into the way teachers think about assessment and the way students respond to assessment environments, especially in terms of their learning efficacy. From this data, a multivariate model can be proposed based on the results of this study.
