Jockey Club Youth Academy for Special Educational Needs

Introduction

With the development of education reform and inclusive education, students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) under the 3-3-4 school system can have equal learning opportunities to complete 6 years of secondary schools and 4 years of university education.  However, there are very few SEN students especially the ones with severe disabilities have the ability to receive excellent grades and to pass the university entrance examinations for continuing their studies. Their lack of opportunities to receive post-secondary education often results in lacking of preparation for the job market and their future careers.

To meet the needs and expectations of continuing education from the SEN secondary school leavers, The Centre for Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Education (CSENIE) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has successfully applied The Chief Executive’s Community Project List 2019 with support from The Education Bureau and Hong Kong Special Schools Council, and received funding from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for the establishment of The Jockey Club Youth Academy for Special Educational Needs (JCYASEN) (the Academy). As part of The EdUHK’s efforts to promote inclusive education, the Academy offers SEN secondary school leavers an on-campus training programme with a series of practical courses and training opportunities to promote lifelong learning, self-management and life skills for the 21st century. In addition, the Academy will provide a platform for EdUHK students and relevant stakeholders to work with the Academy’s students to advance social inclusion.

Academy Goals

Through the varieties of training courses, related-field experiences and activities, the Academy serves the needs of the SEN secondary school leavers and their parents; and benefits teaching professionals from special education schools, SEN coordinators and social workers as well as EdUHK pre-service teachers.  The expected goals are as follow:
