About SES2039 Creativity and STEM for Environmental Sustainability

Environmental sustainability (ES) is one of the most significant human concerns in today’s world. Creativity is at the heart of all changes, improvements and problem solving. It is essential for moving mankind towards sustainable future. Different from artistic and scientific creativity, pro-ES creativity is value-laden, ethical, practical to real-life and useful to future. It covers many aspects, from daily-life, design, education, business, social service, technology, industry to law and government policy, involving personal, societal to global levels. Pro-ES creativity also involves a lot of STEM works, e.g. (in societal level) technologies and designs in constructing green city and building; (in personal level) using solar power in daily-life, changing food wastes into fertilizers, making soap from natural resources, self-inventing a water-saving device, upcycling furniture, repairing domestic appliances, 3D printing a broken part, and etc. This course aims at enhancing students’ creativity and STEM competence for actualizing ES in all these aspects, without going in-depth into advanced knowledge or skills. Several creative thinking and invention strategies will be applied. Biomimicry will also be introduced for inspiring pro-ES designs, through learning from nature. Through this course, participants would be equipped with the creativity and STEM-related knowledge, skills, and motivation for shaping their personal and global sustainable futures. Life-wide learning mode, which includes thinking exercises, hands-on STEM workshops, daily-life practices, community visits, case studies and action projects, would be adopted.
