Infusing collaborative learning in science inquiry: Development of science thinking and science process skills

Abstract:
What are the essential elements of collaborative learning needed for students to work in groups in the process of science investigations for effective science inquiry work? Based on the analysis of students' conversation, the discourse between teacher and students, as well as the students' tasks, the science thinking and science process skills developed during science inquiry activities were studied. The interviews with students provided better understanding of how collaborative learning can be achieved in science inquiries. The findings of the study provided some insights for teachers to support students' development of science thinking and science process skills effectively with collaborative learning elements.
