Abstract

One target of the 2020 Strategy of the European Union is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase the share of renewable energy in final energy consumption and improve energy efficiency. These topics are also part of the 2011 United Nations Climate Change Conference which will be held in Durban, South Africa, from 28 November to 9 December. The respective challenges on the European and the international level are huge, because the community of nations has not yet succeeded in reducing global warming.

But why are the efforts so far doomed to failure?

To get insight in the “tragedy of the commons” as well as to find sustainable solutions for dealing with common goods simulation methods in the tradition of business games are recommended for the teaching-learning process.
