Abstract

In the era of globalization, humanity is obviously facing immense problems in politics, economy and society that are of existential importance. These worldwide challenges can no longer be tackled through “business as usual”.

Against this background it is necessary to gear ethical value orientations towards the universal principle of sustainability or sustainable development. The main questions in this context are:

  • What could an education for sustainable development be like?
  • To what extend are these internationally accepted leitmotifs politically implemented at the present time?

After studying social sciences and the teaching profession at the University of Siegen and Munich (Germany) Dr. Bernhard Ohlmeier worked as a teacher at several primary and secondary schools. He earned his Ph.D. with a dissertation about the political socialization of children. Since 2002 he is research associate at the Chair for Civic Education and Civic Education Didactics at the University of Augsburg (Germany). His field of activity includes Learning about Democracy and Politics as well as Education for Sustainable Development.
