Application for Attainment of Language Exit Requirements (LERs)
For First-Year-First-Degree (FYFD) students admitted in 2024/25 or before

Attainment of LER for English

Eligibility

Attainment of English LER will be granted to students only if they attain the required band score in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Note 1) as stated in the table below or an equivalent.

• All full-time undergraduate students admitted before 2021/22 should attain a valid result via taking the relevant public examination in the last two years of study.
• All full-time undergraduate students admitted in 2021/22 and thereafter should attain a valid result via taking the relevant public examination during their 4/5 years of study. University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded full-time undergraduate non-English-major students admitted in 2021/22 and thereafter are advised to follow the guidance of CLE and take IELTS in the fourth English enhancement course (normally in Year 3/4).

# Students are NOT subject to the minimum IELTS score requirement for each component of IELTS. In addition, the following tests will be accepted as an alternative as having met the LER for English:

1. An attainment of Level 3 or above in all four areas (Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing) in Language Proficiency Assessment (English) obtained in a single sitting or multiple sittings;
2. An attainment of a test score of 95 or above in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test; or
3. Other possible alternatives may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

## Students are NOT subject to the minimum IELTS score requirement for each component of IELTS. In addition, the following tests will be accepted as an alternative as having met the LER for English:

1. An attainment of a test score of 105 or above in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test; or
2. Other possible alternatives may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

### Students are required to obtain IELTS 7.0 or above in each component namely Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. In addition, the following tests will be accepted as an alternative as having met the LER for English:

1. An attainment of a test score of 105 or above in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test; or
2. Other possible alternatives may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Application Procedures

1. Please complete the online application form for English LER attainment:

2. Applicants should attach a softcopy of the IELTS test report form to the online application. If the softcopy provided is incomplete or unclear, the applicant may be required to present the original test report form to the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) for verification.

3. The application will be processed only after all requisite documents have been received.

Application Period

Applications for attainment of English LER should be made by 30 June of each academic year (For graduates in 2024/25, the application deadline has been extended to 31 December 2025).

Attainment of LER for Putonghua

Eligibility

Attainment of Putonghua LER will be granted to students only if they attain the required level in the Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi (PSC) (Note 2) or Tertiary Putonghua Test (TPT) as stated in the table below during their studies at the University.

Application Procedures

1. Please complete the online application form for Putonghua LER attainment:

2. If applicants do not take the PSC at the Putonghua Training and Testing Centre (PTTC) of the EdUHK, applicants should attach a softcopy of the PSC certificate to the online application. If the softcopy provided is incomplete or unclear, the applicant may be required to present the original certificate to the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) for verification.

3. The application will be processed only after all requisite documents have been received.

Application Period

Applications for attainment of Putonghua LER should be made by 30 June of each academic year.

Note 1: Only Paper-based/Computer-based IELTS Academic Tests taken at a test centre in one sitting will be accepted.

Note 2: Non-local students from Mainland China may take PSC at provincial-level, autonomous region-level or municipality-level recognised by the State Language Commission; local students can only take the state-level PSC as stipulated by the State Language Commission.
