***2024 and 2025 Pilot Programme Review***

Program Overview

To raise awareness among Hong Kong youth about climate change and sustainable development, Friends of the Earth (HK) launched the flagship project "Earth Academy", and organized the first "Earth Academy - ESG Youth Leadership Training" 2024 pilot training and the 2025 formal program in collaboration with the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) at the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). This programme selected the Greater Bay Area as its first pilot site, aiming to enhance knowledge exchange in technology and education between Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland through an understanding of local advanced low-carbon technologies, and developed innovative educational materials for sustainable development, providing future educators in Hong Kong with valuable opportunities for exploration, innovation, and practical experience, thereby driving innovation and reform in sustainable development education.

Data Highlights

  • 120 student representatives (from SES, EdUHK) participated in the "Earth Academy - ESG Youth Leadership Training" 2024 and 2025 Programme.
  • 300 primary and secondary school students participated in the GREEN STEAM experimental classes.
  • 100% of participating student representatives and accompanying teachers expressed satisfaction with the project, affirming its effectiveness in raising youth awareness of climate issues.

Event Highlights and Achievements

Innovative Journey in Sustainable Development Education with Rich Experiential Learning:

From October 19 to 20, 2024, Friends of the Earth (HK) and the Department of Science and Environmental Studies at EdUHK led 40 "Earth Academy" students on a field study to the Biosphere 3 Carbon Neutrality Experimental Park in Shenzhen. The itinerary featured explorations of green buildings, energy storage and photovoltaic power facilities, and a black soldier fly resource circulation system. Subsequently, between May and June 2025, the two organizations led another 80 "Earth Academy" students on an expedition to the Greater Bay Area to study energy and sustainable development, mangrove biodiversity and blue carbon, as well as carbon neutrality and low-carbon technologies. These comprehensive field trips facilitated in-depth discussions on climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By inspiring students to examine the Earth's ecosystems and green, low-carbon solutions from multiple perspectives, these programs have provided valuable insights for future educational reform.

Creation of "GREEN STEAM" Teaching Kit with an Interdisciplinary Perspective:

Following the field trip, student representatives participated in the "GREEN STEAM Co-Learning Workshop" and worked in groups to formulate innovative teaching material proposals that integrated environmental protection with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) elements. The student representatives expressed that the programme not only deepened their understanding of global zero-carbon solutions and trends in addressing climate change but also provided opportunities for expansive thinking and hands-on practice, drawing teaching insights from real low-carbon cases while maintaining a broad perspective.

Widespread Attention from Hong Kong media & Unique Green Experience Sharing:

The "Earth Academy" project received widespread attention from Hong Kong media, with several outstanding students invited by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) to the radio programme "Green TEEN Work" to share their learning experiences from the ESG Youth Leadership Training and insights on creating the teaching material proposals integrated environmental and STEAM elements.

GREEN STEAM Experimental Classes Bringing Innovative Ideas to Life:

In 2024 and 2025, more than twenty outstanding participants served as "Earth Academy" volunteer teachers, delivering lessons to over 300 students at primary schools, including St. Stephen's College Preparatory School. By designing creative modules around themes such as "Insect Hotels," "Stray Animals," and "Black Soldier Flies," and by utilizing upcycled materials like bamboo and plastic bottles, they effectively imparted knowledge on climate change and carbon reduction to the younger generation. These activities not only heightened the primary students' awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also enabled the participants to put their ESG leadership into practice. Furthermore, several exceptional participants conducted environmental education workshops at Cheng Chek Chee Secondary School. Through poster exhibitions and group presentations, they inspired students to engage with pressing environmental issues, thereby cultivating their global perspective.

Award Ceremony and Achievement Sharing Session: Advancing ESG Talent Development and Quality Education:

The Award Ceremony cum Sharing Session concluded successfully on 9 December 2024 at The Education University of Hong Kong. Award-winning students openly shared their experiences and reflections from their field trip in sustainable development education and the GREEN STEAM experimental classes. Many students expressed that participating in the training program made them feel a sense of "change" and strengthened their aspirations for a future in education.

***New Launch for 2026 Programme***

Looking Forward: Co-creating a New Chapter in Sustainability Education

To sustain the educational innovation and momentum of the "Earth Academy," Friends of the Earth (HK) is continuing its partnership with the Centre for Education in Environmental and Sustainability (CESD) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) this year to jointly launch the 2026 "Earth Academy - Sustainability Youth Leadership Programme." This program aims to integrate sustainability and environmental knowledge into the classroom through cross-border field studies, enhancing ESG awareness among Hong Kong youth and empowering them to become future leaders in sustainable development.

A key highlight of this year's program is the "Greater Bay Area Mangrove & Sustainable Development Field Study." We sincerely invite passionate individuals to serve as volunteer teachers and join this three-day, two-night immersive expedition. The itinerary encompasses the Futian Mangrove Nature Reserve in Greater Bay Area, which covers Panyu Seagull Island, Zhanjiang Mangroves, and EHang Smart Tech Park. Participants will translate the low-carbon and ESG knowledge acquired during the journey into innovative teaching materials for experimental classes. The exclusive Certificate of Appreciation awarded upon completion serves not only as official recognition of the participants' selfless contributions but also as a solid foundation for their future green career development. Ultimately, this enriching educational journey will generate a profound and lasting impact on the community, the ecological environment, and sustainability education.

Furthermore, this initiative is generously supported by a funding grant of over HK$1 million from a climate change-focused foundation. These funds will be utilized to expand and pilot exchange activities, enhance the development of GREEN STEAM teaching materials and educational resources, and broaden the scope of our topics to encourage even greater participation.
