Introduction Case Study 2

Case Study 1 : Do You Want to Clone Your Dead Pet?

Suppose you had a lovely dog and it died in a car accident. Would you like to get back your dog by the cloning technology?

Suppose you had a lovely dog and it died in a car accident. If scientists help you to get back your dog by cloning technology, do you think the cloned dog is the one you want?

--->

The cloned dog may be the one you want. You can play with it happily again as before.
The cloned dog may NOT be the one you want. It may even not regonize that you are its master!
Do you have any idea on the BENEFITS and RISKS of animal cloning technique to our society?

Pros and Cons of Animal Cloning

Possible Benefits
Possible Risks
Conservation of excellent genes desired by humans The biological diversity will be decreased when all organisms are cloned from one parental organism
Increased productivity of farm animals in order to meet the markets' demands Food chain may be disturbed
Mass production of transgenic animals that are producing products desirable to humans Cloning is too expensive. We may have better things to spend money on
Use of identical specimens for better experimental analysis Animal rights may be violated
Reduced use of natural animals for studies Technological barriers exist at the moment and thus cloning is unrealistic. 227 trials were done to clone one successful Dolly
lnfinitely replenishable food sources Animal cloning brings about merchandised animals who are owned, labeled, sold, and copyrighted
Ability to further our understanding on genetics by studying cloned animals Cloning may not produce an exact copy. Over generations the cloned will be riddled with genetic flaws

Human Cloning

After scientists have experienced sheep and calf cloning, people begin to be aware of human cloning.

Although it sounds far away from now, scientists are certain that the story of human cloning in science fiction will come true one day.

Right now, scientists from different countries are developing techniques for cloning humans.
