Aspiring young teachers ready to join
the teaching profession
|
|
|
To produce teachers
who can lead Hong Kong's education system through the
21st century, the Institute first needs to identify
young people of quality, then provide an education that
turns them into quality teachers. The Institute is justifiably
proud of its students and the progress they make in
moving from being student teachers to fully qualified
classroom practitioners able to meet the challenges
of a new era in education.

Providing teachers
who can excel
A child must progress through three levels of schooling:
kindergarten, primary and secondary, before moving to
the tertiary stage. The Institute aims to provide, for
all three levels, teachers who can excel.
At kindergarten level,
we achieve this through such programmes as the Bachelor
of Education (ECE) and the Certificate in Education
(Early Childhood Education). The first cohort of BEd(ECE)
students, the majority being kindergarten principals,
completed their studies in June 2002, ready and well-prepared
to take on leadership roles in promoting the quality
of early childhood education in Hong Kong. This was
achieved through the programme's emphasis on developing
an understanding of the implications of Western and
Chinese cultural influences for the local context, the
development of research skills and the fostering of
leadership.

The CE(ECE) is the
first three-year full-time pre-service early childhood
education programme at certificate level offered in
Hong Kong. The Institute's mix of meaningful field experience
and the range of knowledge and skills gained through
a programme that includes visual arts, drama, dance,
display and design, provide students with the skills
needed to compete effectively in the job market. The
success of the programme is borne out by the employment
statistics and the feedback received from employers.
All 37 graduates of the first cohort of CE (ECE) graduates
who trained from 1998 to 2001 found jobs by August 2001,
34 of them in kindergartens and three with child care
centres. Their employers report they are very happy
with the work of these young teachers, so much so that
many kindergarten principals have asked the Institute
to recommend students from the second cohort of graduates
to join them in the next year.
At primary level, the same rounded approach applies
to our four-year Bed (Primary) programme which started
in 1998. The first cohort of students completed their
studies in 2002 ready and able to find good positions
in local primary schools. Their employability is due
in no small part to a thorough education that included
cross-cultural exposure in authentic settings through
visits to international schools, language immersion
programmes and overseas study tours added to field studies,
integration of subject studies and field experience.
