Principal values sense of mission in a potential teacher
Mr Fung Man-ching, principal of the Church of Christ in China Kei Faat Primary School is a pioneering HKIEd Honorary Interviewer. He has helped the Institute select students for its BEd programmes for the past three years. "As the school is the largest potential employer for graduates of teacher education programmes, it is natural that we should team up with Institute staff as partners in identifying the most suitable candidates with the attributes required to develop into quality teachers," says Mr Fung. He considers outstanding academic performance as the fundamental but not the only requirement for a good teacher. "Students who have applied to join HKIEd teacher education programmes in recent years have performed well both in terms of academic achievement and sensitivity towards social issues," says Mr Fung. To him, the interview is an indispensable component of the selection process. "Group interviews not only provide me with the opportunity to observe whether applicants possess the leadership and collaboration skills required for teaching in schools, but also to gauge their knowledge of education and their enthusiasm for teaching. We take into consideration other aspects such as appearance, how articulate they are and how effectively they use the voice and body language. However, a positive attitude towards education is very important since it is a sense of mission that makes a devoted and committed teacher."
