A Training Programme on Instructional Leadership for newly appointed principals was commissioned by the Education Department in 2002. Also commissioned by the Education Department, a series of talks for school vice-principals was organised in 2002 and attracted over 700 applicants. A number of prominent local educators provided stimulating talks on the overall theme of Leadership at a Time of Dynamic Change.

The School of Early Childhood Education ran training programmes for two delegations of kindergarten principals and government officials from Xi'an and Changchun at the request of the China Xi'an Association for International Exchange Personnel and Changchun Municipality Education Bureau.

Each delegation comprised government officials, lecturers from early childhood teachers' colleges and kindergarten principals. The programme aimed to update participants' knowledge and understanding of current trends and developments in early childhood education and innovations in management in early childhood settings. The conduct of these training programmes reflects the leadership role in early childhood teacher education in Hong Kong and the Mainland which the School plays.

The Department of English ran a specialist conference on ways in which information technology (IT) can be used to support English Language Teaching in primary and secondary schools. Interface 2001, provided a forum for English language educators to share and develop an understanding of the effective integration of IT in English language teaching and learning. It showcased innovative practice in the primary and secondary school sectors and attracted the active participation of 300 local and overseas teachers, principals and teacher educators. The event provided valuable opportunities to establish networks with teachers and schools for future collaboration.

The Institute also works with individual schools to develop teaching materials and strategies. For example, some schools asked us to advise them on teaching the Chinese curriculum to children from diverse ethnic backgrounds and new immigrants, among other issues, through our School Support Services in 2001-02.

At other times, our work is targeted at schools in general. For example, significant progress has been made in developing citizenship education materials for primary schools. This project will now be extended to junior secondary schools, thanks to a $3.1 million grant awarded during the year under the Quality Education Fund.

We also continually try to improve the knowledge and skills of our student teachers through school-based research. One of our projects is looking into how to develop student teachers' competence in teaching thinking skills in primary schools. Another is looking at what skills novice teachers need in order to be considered professionally competent in Hong Kong.

The dynamic relationship between the Institute and kindergartens and schools enables us to produce graduates whose education is based on experience and the pursuit of excellence. It also enables us to contribute to the lifelong education and improvement of all teaching staff and institutions. Additionally, the Institute participates in two Government programmes that address lifelong education in the community as a whole. The Associate Degree Programme and Project Yi Jin offer school-leavers with a Secondary 5 to 7 education, the opportunity to improve their skills and prepare for entry into bachelor degree programmes.
