Mentors inspired by peers
and students
SHK Li Fook Hing Secondary School has a long history of hosting HKIEd students for Field Experience. In June, two of its
teachers, Hon Man-shan and Yip Yuen-yee, took part in the CDSPFE Mentoring Training Course. "We learned a lot about
different methods of mentoring and peer review which help us understand our own strengths and weaknesses as
teachers - things it is difficult to identify by oneself," say Ms Hon and Ms Yip.
As a result the school has adopted a culture of peer review, establishing a formal mentoring and peer review programme. "Mentoring
and peer review will enhance the overall quality of teaching and benefit not only us but also the next generation," they conclude.
Another of our partners is the AD and FD of POHL Leung Shing Tak Primary School (AM). The principal, Mr Law Ching-bor, is a firm
believer in the need for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and has enrolled the school in a
mentoring project run by CDSPFE. "We hope, with the support and advice of the Centre, to
reinforce our achievements and further enhance the quality of our teaching," he says. "The
improvement of schools and their curricula require CPD focused on increasing interest in
learning. If pupils appreciate what they learn, they will show initiative in their studies and
achieve more," says Mr Law. "I believe the mentoring project can help teachers broaden their
horizons and understand the secrets of teaching. By sharing experience and knowledge
learned through the project, we can inspire one another to greater successes," he concludes.
