The Institute established the Centre for Development and Research
in Small Class Teaching in February 2006. The Centre builds
on the success of the "Optimising Small Class Teaching
Collaborative Project" which has, since 2004, involved
eight local schools. The Centre's mission is to support teachers
and schools to improve in the teaching and learning within
small class settings in Hong Kong. The Centre has been actively
building collaborative networks with schools to enhance their
capacities in the implementation of small class teaching,
support teachers' professional development, conduct research
and foster professional exchanges with the mainland and other
neighbouring regions to improve the quality of small class
teaching.

Funded by the Education and Manpower Bureau, the Centre for
Assessment Research and Development was established in October
2005, to play a vital role in changing the assessment culture
in Hong Kong. This Centre aims to develop the level of assessment
literacy in three key areas - the assessment of learning;
the assessment for learning; and assessment as learning. Since
its inception, the Centre has invited 3,000 teachers and 2,500
parents to a range of seminars and workshops and has received
very positive feedback. On 29 June 2006, in conjunction with
the Department of Educational Psychology, Counselling and
Learning Needs, the Centre organised a highly successful Teachers' Day.
This took place as part of the Pacific Rim Objective Measurement
Symposium. This Symposium was attended by about 200 local
and international participants from 14 countries.
