One of the Institute's policies is to encourage academic staff
at all levels to develop research that relates their teaching
and professional service programmes to education development
in Hong Kong. This research effort has resulted in some 300
refereed publications in scholarly books, monographs, chapters
and journals, representing a nine percent increase over 2004-05.
Playing an active role in translating applied
research into benefits for the school community, the Institute
received substantial funding to carry out research projects
under two of its centres. With funds of $30 million from the
Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB), the Centre for Learning-study
And School Partnership (CLASP) has been conducting a 3-year
project, which aims to empower teachers by engaging them in
Learning Studies. These generate research lessons that facilitate
higher quality learning and provide schools with a useful
framework for peer observation and learning.

In 2005, the Centre for Assessment Research and Development
(CARD) was established. About $35 million in funding was obtained
from EMB which supported the Centre in launching a 3-year
project commencing in July 2005. The project aims at enhancing
the assessment literacy and practice of teachers, through
intensive site- based professional development in schools,
parent education, and applied research in assessment. The
work of the Centre is highly relevant to the local context,
as schools are beginning to develop skills in school-based
assessment.
