The HKIEd is formally established on 25 April 1994.

Mr Simon S O Ip, Founding Council Chairman, and Professor C K Leung, Founding Director, unveil
the logo. The green leaves symbolise the five constituent Colleges and the orange-gold
sun signifies the Institute's growth and aspiration to contribute towards the development of a fully trained professional teaching force in Hong Kong.

The HKIEd comes under the aegis of the University Grants Committee.

The new campus at Tai Po provides purpose-built academic, sports and amenities facilities for 5,000 full-time equivalent students. The Hon Tung Chee-hwa, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR, officiates at the Opening Ceremony of the Tai Po campus, accompanied by Mr Simon S O Ip, Founding Council Chairman and Professor Ruth Hayhoe, President from 1997 to 2002.

The Hon Tung Chee-hwa, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR announced in his first Policy Address (1997) that all new teachers should be professionally trained degree holders. The Institute launched its first degree programme, with its first cohort of graduates in 2002. The graduates were warmly welcomed by school principals and attained a 97% employment rate.

Professor Paul Morris, President, announces the granting of self-accrediting status by the HKSAR Government with effect from 1 May 2004. The upgraded status brings enhanced flexibility to the Institute in meeting community needs and in responding to changing education policies.

The HKIEd celebrates its 10th anniversary with celebration activities under the theme "Passion for Education"

The years see the establishment of the Hong Kong Institute of Education HSBC Early Childhood Learning Centre and the HKIEd Jockey Club Primary School, both serve as important milestones of quality education and innovative educational practices.

In the midst of the SARS epidemic, the Institute launches a community-wide project entitled "Learning from SARS and Beyond" encouraging all students in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools to turn crisis into an opportunity for learning.

A charity walk "Step by Step and Heart to Heart" is launched to help raise funds for the SARS victims and their families.
