Methodology and design of the study

Since the study was aimed in seeking answers to various specific questions, the researcher used the purposive (non-probability) technique of sampling. The data /information were gathered in the form of narratives (responses) put to the students of middle school level (Classes VI-VIII). For various aspects of school and its functioning, observation (participant) was also used. The observation details were recorded in the form of ‘notes’ .The age group of students was of 12-14 years. This is the level when children have completed their primary schooling and have started learning about the science concepts. For this study Government Middle School situated in rural area of Haryana in India was selected. Researcher well remembers the day when she started her academic journey of three months: a day of hope, excitement and expectation. It was altogether a novel experience of teaching students in a remote rural school.
