Invited Speech at the Teacher Development Conference

Prof. Y. C. Cheng was invited to give a keynote speech at the Teacher Development Conference organized by the Po Leung Kuk for 1,000 primary teachers on 10 December 2010. Topic: “To develop the talents for the 21 century”.


Keynote speech at the 2nd East Asian International Conference on Teacher Education Research

Prof. Y. C. Cheng was invited to give a keynote speech at the 2 nd East Asian International Conference on Teacher Education Research organized by Hong Kong Institute of Education, Japanese Society for the Study on Teacher Education, and Normal Education Branch, Chinese Association of Higher Education, 15-17 December 2010. Topic: Teacher education for the future: Reforms and new learning in the Asia-Pacific .
Blue skies 2010-11 Live-in Learning & Stimulus Meeting 2

The 2 days and 1 night Live-in Learning gave the opportunity of the blue skiers a comprehensive learning environment to sharpen leadership skills and understand the meaning of change and innovation as a leader. The residential workshop was composed of: (1) two parallel talks conducted by Prof. Dean William TJOSVOLD on Conflict Management, and by Dr. David ADCOCK on Leadership in Inclusive Schools; (2) a Stimulus Talk by Mr. LEE Ming-kwai, Dick, GBS, QPM, CPM, on Leadership in a Changing Environment; (3) a Leading Learning Talk by Dr. Robin CHEUNG Man-biu, MH, on The Leadership Paradigm for the Health Promoting School; (4) Innovation Showcase activities; and (5) sharing and discussion within and across Clusters / Learning Squares.

The design of Matinee 2 aimed to stimulate learning in various contexts. It was held on a cruise trip. During the workshop at sea, Links Leaders were required to define and articulate their leadership values and vision, and started to prepare their vision statement.

Links: Matinee 1

The first Matinee of Links was held regarding the Litany of Leadership. It included stimulus sharing from Ms. Pam Ryan (Director of Education of ESF), and principals from an ESF school (Mr. Ed Wickins, King George V School ) and a local DSS school ( Mr. Nic PUIU , HKMA David Li Kwok Po College). It gave the Links Leaders a sound understanding of the important elements of leadership.

Mexico Invitations on Educational Reform and Research

Prof. Y. C. Cheng was invited to give a keynote speech at the CLASE 2010 Leaders Summit “Leadership in Education: The Future is Now”, organized by Mexican Civil Society Council for Quality in Education on 25-27 October 2010, Mexico City. The audiences were over 1,000 leaders and educators from different parts of Mexico. Also, he was invited to give an advisory presentation on “What are the major obstacles in systemic change in education? How to overcome?” at the roundtable for specially invited opinion and social leaders of Mexico. In addition, the Panamerican University as well as the Consejo Mexicano de Investigacion Educativa (COMIE) and Departamento De Investigaciones Educativas Del Cinvestav have invited him respectively to give two research seminars on leadership and reforms to the Mexican researchers and scholars.  Prof. Cheng has a very fruitful academic and professional visit in Mexico.
Prof. Allan Walker was made a Fellow of the Australian Council for Educational Leadership

Prof. Allan Walker was made a Fellow of the Australian Council for Educational Leadership at their Annual Conference in October. Fellowship are awarded to educators who are judged to have made an outstanding contribution to the study and practice of educational leadership. Prof. Walker was honored for his work particularly in HK and the Asia Pacific region.
Dr. LU Jiafang (and ZHAO Jing) won a 1st prize for their conference paper

Dr. LU Jiafang (and ZHAO Jing) were awarded a 1 st prize for their conference paper entitled Review and future research on organizational change strategies and mechanism in China at the 2010 Biennial Conference of Chinese Association of Social Psychology (Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China).  It was one of only ten prizes out of 700 submitted conference papers. 
First blue skies 2010-11 Stimulus Meeting

The first blue skies Stimulus Meeting for 2010-11 was a great success. The guest speaker was Prof. Frederick MA Si-hang GBS, JP., who talked about strategic leadership in the financial and commercial sectors – Lessons for educational leaders of blue skies. Beginning and experienced principals worked together to analyse the talk and plan their learning programme.
Links Forum 1: Building Capacity

The Centre recently launched a new leader learning programme for the English Schools Foundation. The innovative programme – Links – will run for approximately one year. The first Forum included a talk by Mr. Eddie Ng JP, Chairman of the HK Examinations and Assessment Authority. Further information about Links can be found at http://www.ied.edu.hk/apclc/links/

The William Walker Oration 2010

Professor Allan Walker was invited to present at the 19th William Walker Oration to 1,200 delegates at the ACEL/CCEAM Conference in Sydney on Sep 30, 2010.
Blue Line Knowledge Transfer Forum

Prof. Cheng Yin Cheong conducted a knowledge transfer seminar entitled “Leading Curriculum in Times of Change” for a group of over 80 principals participating in the Centre’s “Blue Line’ leader learning programme.
The Director’s Cut

Jenny Lewis, the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Council of Educational Leaders visited the APCLC in early September and conducted a coaching leadership workshop entitled “The Director’s Cut’ of the “Links: Leading Learning and Schools”, our ongoing programme for leaders in international schools.

Invited keynote speech at the Annual Meeting of Contemporary Educators

Prof. Cheng was invited to give a speech at the Annual Meeting of Contemporary Educators, organized by the “Principals” Journal, Chongcing, China, 20-22 August 2010.
2010 Academy of Management Annual Meeting

Dr. LU Jiafang attended the 2010 Academy of Management Annual Meeting held in Montreal, Canada. She also presented a paper in this meeting. Title: Work-family enrichment: the role of work engagement.

ISEA Learning in Hong Kong

APCLC hosted a professional visit for a group of senior Australian leaders from New South Wales Institute of Senior Educational Administrators.  The group visited a number of primary and secondary schools, had discussions with Centre staff and EDB officials.
Interview with the Chinese national school principal’s professional journal

Prof. Cheng was interviewed by the Chinese national school principal’s professional journal “Principals” and his views on “Straightforward to the Third Wave Reform” has recently been reported as a long feature article in the July 2010 issue of this journal. Prof. Cheng is also the advisor to this Journal.
Keynote Speech at the Symposium on e-learning for Transformational Learning and Teaching

Professor Y.C. Cheng was invited to give a keynote speach at the Symposium on e-learning for Transformational Learning and Teaching, organized by the elearning Forum, on 16 July 2010, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Topic: “The Future of Hong Kong Education: Paradigm Shift and e-learning”. He has also been invited to be the Honorary Advisor to the e-learning Forum, Hong Kong (since June 2010)
Blue skies Impact Study

Dr. David Gurr and Dr. Lawrie Drysdale from the University of Melbourne visited the APCLC in early July and conducted an Impact Study of the ‘blue skies:', our ongoing programme for Beginning principals. They talked with more than 20 principals involved in the programme in various ways to explore the influence that blue skies on principal practice.
Vietnam Connections

From July 8-13 Prof. Hallinger and Prof. Walker held a number of meetings in Ho Chi Minh City. They met with:
  • Senior SEAMEO  officials and Prof. Dennis Berg on a number of occassions about the possibilty of offering HKIEd's Ed.D.programe in Vietnam. Also distributed information on HKIED's PhD and IEMA programs.
  • Dr. Ly Pham (Hoa Sen University) and Tuan Bang (University of Social Sciences) respectively for discussion on possible collaboration and the corresponding follow-up actions to be taken. Also distributed information on HKIED's PhD and IEMA programs
Thailand Connections

From July 5-7, Prof. Hallinger met with:

  • Dr. Prasit Kheowsri (Associate Director of the National Institute for the Development of Teachers and Educational Personnel) for collaboration issues and also distributed information on HKIED's PhD. , Ed.D. and IEMA programs.
  • Dr. Kamontip Snidvongs of Anabas Learning Inc., Thailand for research data input on educational change in Thailand.
  • Daniel Fuchs (Director of the MBA program at Silapakorn University) and distributed information on HKIED's PhD., Ed.D. and IEMA programs.
China Connections

From June 29 to July 5 Prof. Walker
  • Completed the M.Ed. course School Leadership and Management (part of the Master of Education program) at Fudan University. Also distributed information on HKIED's PhD, Ed.D and IEMA programs. Prof. Walker was appointed as an Adjunct Professor of Fudan University.
  • Gave an invited speech and met Prof.s YANG Xiaowei, National Institute of Schooling Reform and Development at East China Normal University. Also distributed information on HKIED's PhD,  Ed.D and IEMA programs
  • Gave an invited seminar at the Institute of Basic Education Research at the Shanghai Academy of Educational Sciences and met with Prof.s Fu Luijian and Lu Jing about joint research possiblities and supporting the PISA research in Shanghai.  Also distributed information on HKIED's PhD,  Ed.D and IEMA programs. Prof. Walker was appointed as an Adjunct Professor of Shanghai Academy of Education Sciences.
  • Presented a Workshop at 'The Second Middle School Attached to Fudan University' and distributed information about the IEMA program.
Research Productivity Enhancement (RPE) award scheme

APCLC announced the initiation of a Research Productivity Enhancement (RPE) award scheme in the area of leadership and change on July 5. The purpose of this scheme is to support and enhance the research productivity of HKIEd faculty members who are conducting research directly relevant to the APCLC mission.
Dr. Lee Moo Sung presents paper at IEA in Sweden

Dr. Lee Moo Sung presented a paper co-authored with Prof. Hallinger,  "National Contexts Influencing Principals’ Time Use: Economic Development, Societal Culture, and Educational System" at the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement's (IEA) International Research Conference in Gothenburg, Sweden on July 1st, 2010.

Hong Kong Connections

Prof. Walker spoke at the Annual Prize-Day ceremony at PLK Laws Foundations College on June 29. He talked with students about ‘Avoiding a Frankenfuture.’
Dr. LU Jiafang presents paper at CRFR 2010 in UK

Dr. LU Jiafang presented a paper titled "Does Work-family Conflict Hurt Organization? An Examination of Cross-Field Effect" at the CRFR International Conference 2010: Changing Families in a Changing World, which took place at the University of Edinburgh on June 16-18, 2010.
Prof.Cheng is appointed as a Panel Advisor for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

In May, Prof. Cheng was invited by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to be an advisor to its College Ready Work Panel, to provide advice and consultation on key issues related to the implementation of the initiatives including, among other things, assessment, curriculum, leadership and capacity, and operational factors.  Recently, he has been invited to attend the first advisory meeting held on 17-18 June in San Francisco.

Keynote Speech at UAE

Prof. Cheng Yin-cheong was invited to give a keynote speech at the Symposium on Management and Implementation of the Education Reform Policies organized by UNESCO- Regional Centre for Educational Planning (RCEP) and supported by the Ministry of Education of United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 20 May 2010.
The Symposium was attended by around 40 national leaders including the Minister of Education (H.E. Hamid al-Qatami), the Director-General ( Ali Mihid al-Swaidi), Executive Directors in the MoE, Heads of Departments and School Districts, and representatives of school administrators. This was the first symposium organized by the RCEP at this top level for implementing education reform policies.
Principals visiting the CLP(China Light) Eco Home

Dr. Anissa Chan, Secondary Head Sponsor of the blue skies programme at APCLC, organized the blue skies secondary principals visiting the CLP (China Light) Eco Home on May 18, 2010. On the day, secondary blue skies principals were offered the opportunity to learn about CLP’s experience on corporate management, sustainability and environment, social corporate responsibility.
Training at South China Normal University

Prof. Hallinger was invited by SCNU to give a training for Outstanding Principal’s Program on Leading Change in Asia: Challenges for School Leaders on May 20, 2010. There are about 20 outstanding principals in Guangzhou joined the program.
Director speaks at Fudan University

Prof. Walker spoke at the Institute for Higher Education, Fudan University in Shanghai on May 12-17, 2010. He gave lectures to principals, educational leaders, doctoral students and faculty from Fudan University and East China Normal University.
Prof. Cheng is appointed as the President-elect of the World Educational Research Association (WERA) (2010-2012)

Prof. Cheng was appointed as the President-elect of the World Educational Research Association (WERA) (2010-2012) during the Council held on 5-6 May in Denver USA. WERA now has 27 founding organizations including key educational research associations in different parts of the world, such as American Educational Research Association (AERA), European Educational Research Association (EERA), British Educational Research Association (BERA), Japanese Educational Research Association, Korean Educational Research Association, etc.
Discussions in Denver

The Joseph Lau Luen Hung Charitable Trust Asia Pacific Centre members presented papers at the Annual Meeting of The American Educational Research Association (AERA) held in Denver, Colorado, April 30 - May 4. Philip presented a number of papers highlighting his ground-breaking work into leadership as a reciprocal process. One of Allan’s papers - Who's to blame: Ethical decisions at the hard end investigated the influence of systemic reform on principal decision making. Prof Cheng YC talked about the need for a paradigm shift is how we conceptualize education internationally. As well as presenting at the conference, Dr. Paula Kwan received the “Highly Recommended Paper Award 2010” from the Journal of Educational Administration. Congratulations Paula!
Blue skies Special Learning Event in Shenzhen

Principal Leona Lam, Primary Head Sponsor of the blue skies programme at APCLC, organized the blue skies primary principals visiting Nanshan Experimental Primary School in Shenzhen on April 13, 2010. On the day, altogether 40 blue skies principals and curriculum development officers of their schools visited the school – participants were offered the opportunity to better understand teaching and learning of primary school in the Chinese Mainland.
Prof. Hallinger delivers papers at AERA meeting in the USA

Prof. Philip Hallinger delivered 4 papers at the meeting of the American Educational Research Association in Denver Colorado. The papers covered leadership, school improvement and leadership for learning.
World Class Research in Hong Kong

The APCLC conducted the “World Class Research in Hong Kong” programme from 19 April to 21 April, for a group of doctoral students from Chulalongkorn University at HKIEd. Prof.s Y. C. Cheng, Philip Hallinger, Allan Walker, Rupert Maclean, Paula Kwan and Lee Moo Sung shared their research projects with the participants.
Simulation Workshop at South China Normal University

Prof.s Hallinger and Lu Jiafang were invited to conduct a Simulation Workshop for a group of primary school principals from Beijing at South China Normal University (SCNU) on April 1.
Invited Speech at the “Ideas and Universities” Virtual Seminar Series

Prof. Cheng was invited to give a speech at the “Ideas and Universities” Virtual Seminar Series, co-organized by the WUN (Worldwide Universities Network), FAS-Hong Kong Institute of Education, University of Wisconsin, University of Bristol, and Zhe Jiang University, on 16 April 2010. Topic: A typology of higher education development in the Asia-Pacific region: Reforms and education hub.
Victorian Principals’ Learning in Hong Kong

The APCLC in collaboration with the Asia Education Foundation organized the “Victorian Principals’ Learning in Hong Kong” programme from 28 March – April 1 for a group of principals from Victoria, Australia.  This programme offered an opportunity to Victoria and Hong Kong Principals to understand each others’ education system, reforms and achievements, as well as to form links for partnership development of Hong Kong and Australia schools.

The Principals’ Conference is jointly organized by The Hong Kong Institute of Education, the Hong Kong Subsidized Secondary Schools Council and the Subsidized Primary Schools Council and co-organized by the Hong Kong Special Schools Council on March 29, 2010.
Director speak at South China Normal University

Prof. Hallinger was invited to speak at the Opening Ceremony of SCNU’s School of Professional Development and Research on Primary and Secondary Education on March 18.

Directors attend the IB Conference in Singapore

Directors attend the IB Conference "Unlocking the Treasure Within" in Singapore. Prof.s Walker and Hallinger presented the findings of their recently completed research into Programme Transitions for the IBO Research Office in New York. Their papers elicited considerable interest from international school leaders from across the Region.

Prof. Cheng Yin-cheong has been invited to give a keynote speech at the International Conference on UK-China School Leadership Strategic Dialogue, organized by the British Embassy, Cultural and Education Section, 9 March 2010. Title: Building schools for the 21 st Century: Trends, Challenges and New Paradigm.
Directors speak at Fudan University

Prof. Walker and Hallinger were invited to speak at the Institute for Higher Education, Fudan University in Shanghai on March 3, 2010. They addressed more than 100 school principals and Faculty from Fudan and East China Normal University.
Visit to Dalian Education University

Prof. Walker and Lu Jiafang visited the Dalian Education University to meet with the Senior Management Team. Allan presented an invited address entitled "Designing and leading a learning school: aligning conditions that count". The talk was attended by 200 school principals, outstanding teachers and university faculty members.
