2018-11-20

From November 8 to 11 November, the Taiwan Education Research Association-Global Association of Chinese Creativity was held at National Sun Yat-sen University. Dr. Wong Koon Lin Linnie, Assistant Professor at the Department of Education Policy and Leadership of EdUHK, and Lee Chi Kin John, Chair Professor at the Department of Curriculum and Instruction of EdUHK, presented a paper,"Cultivating Hong Kong Students to Become “Good Citizens”: Teachers’ Perceptions of Democratic Values versus Patriotic Values".

Below is the abstract of the paper.

Under “One Country, Two Systems” in Hong Kong, “good citizens” as advocated by the Chinese government and “good citizens” as embraced by pro-democratic groups are seem contradicted to each other. The current divisions in Hong Kong society reflect this competing values of citizenship. Teachers play an essential role in nurturing students to become “good citizens,” because teachers are the key figures implementing education and curriculum policies in schools. This study employed mixed methods approach to examine Hong Kong teachers’ perceptions of “good citizens” between democratic values and patriotic values. 1,089 teachers from 131 Hong Kong primary schools participated in this study. Subsequently, 29 teachers from 12 of the schools were chosen for interview. The findings indicated patriotic values were more complementary towards democratic values than conflicting. Critical patriotic citizens with multiple identities who participate rationally in social and political activities are more likely to facilitate democratic development in Hong Kong. These findings have implications for cultivating citizens for polarized societies and highlights the importance of learning to live together in a complex world.
