Project Year: 2018-2019
Self-funded project, supported by SSC for my Development Leave in March 2018
This project reviews the policing systems and their operation in colonial and SAR Hong Kong and Macau from comparative angle. Policing in both cities was a key issue before and after the sovereignty retrocession in 1997 and 1999, and the performance of police authorities in the past two decades has also been a center of controversies. This study makes examines the archives, openly accessible literatures and supplements with personal interviews, to analyze how the history legacy transforms the policing to current forms, demystify public prejudice and identify the challenges ahead of both forces in the era of their integration with mainland China.
