MScESLPLD Seminar: Diagnosis and Treatment for Dyscalculia

2022-11-21

The MScESLPLD programme is co-organizing the following seminar with the HKAST:

Diagnosis and Treatment for Dyscalculia

Very young children in kindergarten and in primary school may experience problems in learning mathematics. Some of these problems can be predictors for dyscalculia manifesting later in the development. Early detection of these signals is important but dyscalculia is not only a question of math problems. Within the diagnostic framework, in addition to the math skills, other aspects will also be examined such as memory, language, motivation and problem-solving skills. Children with dyscalculia or minor mathematical difficulties require specialised support. Within the therapy we jump back to previous phases in the normal math development and appeal to earlier learning strategies. As a speech therapist we will suggest, based on the diagnostic information, supporting aspects at school: stimulation, differentiation, dispensation or compensation. I will discuss the following topics:

- Risk signals depending on the age
- Diagnostic aspects and the importance of an extensive mistake analysis
- Therapy aspects, learning strategies and interventions
- Importance of psycho-education

About the speaker:

Dr Ilse Smits is a speech therapist and industrial engineer. She is a lecturer at Thomas More's speech therapy and audiology course. She teaches the courses physics, statistics, and math disorders. In addition, she also teaches 'dyscalculia' in the international program of training. Within her speech therapy practice, she guides children and young adults with math problems, particularly with dyscalculia. She also has experience in guiding young people in their study approach, both individually and within the professional course unit.
