MScESLPLD students and staff participated in the Speech-Language Pathology International Network Summer school at The University of Turku, Finland from 14-21 Aug 2022

Speech-language pathology Master of Science in Educational Speech-Language Pathology & Learning Disabilities (MScESLPLD) students Michael Cheng, Phrixis Ip, Emmy Lam, Joanne Wu, Isis Leung and Rita Tai participated in the 27th Speech-Language Pathology International Network Summer school (SLP-IN SS) at The University of Turku, Finland from 14-21 Aug 2022. A total of 135 students and 44 academic/ teaching staff from twenty speech-language pathology academic training programmes around the world gathered in Turku for this exciting academic and cultural exchange event. There were 8 keynote lectures and 14 workshops tailored for this year’s themes:

 

  • The importance of eye-tracking research in Speech-language pathology (SLP)
  • Global perspectives on SLP: SLP after the pandemic
  • Childhood and adult-acquired speech and language disorders
  • Interprofessional Care (IC) in SLP

 

 

In the curriculum road show event, our students presented the unique MScESLPLD programme which includes innovative programme components in learning disabilities. They taught their international peers Cantonese via interesting Hong Kong slangs. Not only our students, SEC staff also engaged actively in SLP-IN SS. Dr Kevin Yuen presented a keynote address on “The effects of face-masking wearing on speech acoustics and speech recognition in Cantonese”, which is a collection of recent evidence-based capstone research projects of the 8th MScESLPLD graduates.  Dr Lorinda Kwan-Chen ran workshops on “Script intervention: how can you improve communication in everyday activities focusing on personally relevant scripts.” which is a new language therapy program for adults with acquired language disorders.

 

 

 

Besides work, all staff and students enjoyed a beautiful day at the Heinänokka area outside Turku for team building activities, barbecue, lake swimming, and Finnish sauna!

 

 

 

 

 

The MScESLPD team is an active partner for the SLP-IN. The team actively participates in the steering committee and the board which contributes to the development of SLP education programme and research activities in the network.

 

 

 

 

 

 

MScESLPLD has been fully endorsed by the Hong Kong Institute of Speech Therapists (www.hkist.org.hk). Graduates of MScESLPLD are eligible to apply to become "Member of Register of Speech Therapists accredited by Department of Health“. MScESLPLD’s host department – The Department of Special Education and Counselling is the only affiliated member from China at the International Association of Communication Sciences and Disorders (IALP, www.ialpsoc.info).
