The Department of Special Education and Counselling established two research clusters on (1) Social and Emotional Learning, and (2) Sensory, Cognitive, and Language Processing. The research clusters aim to facilitate productive discussions and collaboration among members of the clusters, with a view toward the development of joint projects, publications, and grant applications. The overview and purposes of the two research clusters are described below.
Research Cluster (1): Social and Emotional Learning
The SEL research cluster involves a team of researchers who collaborate and work across a number of thematic areas that critically contribute to the theoretical and empirical understanding of social and emotional competencies. The cluster not only focuses on children and young people who demonstrate difficulties with social interaction, emotional regulation, and/or experience mental health problems, but also conducts research work to support teachers, families, schools, and communities in removing the emotional barriers to learning and building resilience for all children and young people. The work has pedagogical and clinical implications for cultivating social and emotional competencies in childhood and adolescence.

Research Cluster (2): Sensory, Cognitive, and Language Processing
The SCLP research cluster involves a strong team of researchers with diverse expertise, including developmental psychology, bilingualism, speech perception, and others. We collaborate and work across a number of thematic areas that critically contribute to the theoretical and empirical understanding of sensory, cognitive, and language processing. The cluster focuses on understanding both individuals with normal abilities and individuals who demonstrate difficulties with sensory, cognitive, or language problems, using behavioral, biological, and neural techniques. We also conduct applied research work to support practitioners, families, and communities in developing and implementing assessment tools and evidence-based interventions.
