Presented by

ABSTRACT

Despite the efforts made by linguists and researchers, a corpus-based linguistic approach remains largely unknown to the majority of professional teaching community who often rely on an intuition-based approach to solving language issues as well as developing pedagogical materials. Being aware of the good potential of the education values of these corpora, a number of colleagues from LML worked collaboratively to transfer their expertise and knowledge on corpus linguistics to school teachers in both Hong Kong and elsewhere (mainland China or other countries/regions). A total of 10 workshops have been conducted, attracting more than 300 participants from more than 100 schools in Hong Kong and mainland China. The workshop series in developing participants’ corpus literacy has been positively evaluated by the participants. In addition, a corpus-based teaching and learning website was built to disseminate the knowledge and corpus-based approach to school language teachers. The website has been well received by our school teachers as well as experts on corpus linguistics. This seminar will share the successful experience in the planning, organization and implementation of the workshop series to school teachers. (Presentation PDF)
