Grammar Teaching Resources for School Teachers

Presented by

Dr LEE Fung King Jackie (Associate Head / Associate Professor,LML)

ABSTRACT

Traditional grammar teaching through habit formation is still prevalent in many English classrooms. Some school teachers present learners with drills and decontextualised isolated words and sentences. Learners are asked to repeat and use forms in a “mechanical” and “monotonous” way. To many language students, learning grammar rules is a painful activity. How to conduct grammar teaching in a more effective way is the concern of many school teachers. In this paper I describe the findings of a group of BEd(EL) Year 4 students who joined a Knowledge Transfer project, an outcome of which was the development of a website that provides useful grammar teaching resources for school teachers. Another outcome of the project was the opportunity provided for the participating student teachers to apply their pedagogical learning to real practice. The ongoing discussion with other project team members at regular meetings on materials development and the school try-outs allowed the student teachers to have a better understanding of the contemporary pedagogical principles, and to enhance their lesson planning and materials development skills. Four tryout lessons were conducted in Hong Kong and in Bangkok to assess the usefulness of the materials. Positive feedback was received. (presentation PDF)
